  3. were usually written in Latin by clerics, who
  4. borrowed extensively from one another. Two
  5. early examples were written by Gregory of
  6. Tours in the 6th century and by Bede. In the
  7. later Middle Ages, vernacular chronicles
  8. appear, written by laymen, but by then the
  9. chronicle tradition was in decline, soon to
  10. be supplanted by Renaissance histories.
